I have similar misgivings about Jefferson, and, in fact, favor the Federalists. I don't know if you have noticed the many times I have had arguments with Southern revisionists on the board, but I am definitely a Unionist. It is one thing to think that the constitutional balance is somewhat askew, and requires some devolution, and another to revert to primitive notions of state sovereignty taking precedence over federal sovereignty. As far as I am concerned, once "we the people" established the Constitution, sovereignty derived directly from the people of the United States, not derivatively from the states. This fact was further emphasized as the process of accepting territories into statehood progressed: by the time of Lincoln, most states had been made by the federal government, not the other way around. I also note the irony of the Louisiana Purchase. I am happy to have an area of agreement.........
