The fundamental problem is that home audio/video equipment is exactly the sort of complacent, lush-margined, low-innovation market that is ripe for complete devastation by an aggressive post-desktop PC industry. But instead of a frontal assault, CPQ is looking to tiptoe into the high-margin club by offering an underfunctioned box at a price point that's sure to keep the volumes down to barely a read on the meter. I'd be surprised if there's as much as $150 worth of componentry in that $799 pricetag. Real innovation in this space will have to come from elsewhere--perhaps MSFT on the heels of their XBox initiative.
