Yes, it is a real problem. People do not spend nearly enough time on ancient and Medieval history, and even early modern history is given short shrift. To take a smallish matter: few people realize that strictly speaking, the Roman Empire lasted about 1500 years, from the time of Augustus to the fall of Constantinople. The Chinese Empire, despite turmoil, lasted in one form or another for nearly twice as long. Many countries, like France, have been unified for several hundred years. America is still a youthful country, and may very well have its best years ahead.......
