So do you think Intel would support two 64-bit standards, IA-64 and X86-64? I don't see how they can wait and see if the X86-64 takes off to do anything. I envision Hammer being the standard 32-bit desktop CPU that, by the way, is also a 64-bit processor. I think even Intel's marketing machine will have a hard time competing with this if all they have is a 32-bit desktop processor. Even though nobody will really need a 64-bit desktop for sometime to come.

Hammer also seems like a slam dunk for low cost 2P servers. All AMD has to do now is deliver.

This is for Paul. I know Itanium is already in the hands of Software developers. So yes IA-64 has a head start, but you have to admit that Intel can not bury their heads in the sand over the threat of Hammer. Maybe Intel hopes that developers will be spending all of their resources trying to get performance out of IA-64 and not have anybody left to port to X86-64.
