Amy,<<<now that inventory is clearing in the industry, it will certainly be much easier for any mfg to determine true underlying demand level. I think the high inventory levels from last quarter had mfgs in the industry as a whole, all confused about visibility. This (visibility issue) shouldn't be an issue moving forward now that inventory levels are worked off. >>>

This "visibility issue" has to be a smoke screen. If it is true that these companies cannot project sales three months out, they should reconsider their marketing budgets. They are not getting what they are paying for. It should be a lot less complex and more accurate than sampling 500 likely voters to determine how they are likely to vote in a Presidential election.

Companies like IBM have marketing people parked at a desk right outside the CEO's office at almost every major organization in the world with an IT budget.

It's not like they wake up one morning and decide how much they spend on technology the following week.

If you are in the business of selling technology on a large scale, you have to have better visibility than Joe Osha or Drew Peck.

Intel should stop spending so much money running those cute little ads with the funny looking men painted in blue, and spend it on some real marketing people and forecasting tools.

Mary
