If we were merely discussing the relative freedom of the contemporary United States, I would have no problem. It is the other part that elicits condemnation rather than debate. The laundry list you adduce is not worth killing one human being over. Licensure is simply a reasonable restriction on our freedom, given the lethality of the automobile. Taxation is found in any government, and both sales and property taxes are simply traditional. Income tax is a relative innovation, and I am in favor of a flat and simple tax, but it is arguably more reasonable than a tax on property. Although there are still sodomy laws in some states, they are not likely to be enforced. Those laws that might be enforced, like public lewdness or child abuse, are perfectly reasonable. Discrete consenting adults are on their own. About toilets, I don't know, since most of us are on city or county sewage lines, that does not seem exceptionable. I understand when one has one's own septic tank, but remember, codes are made for the rule, not the exception, and they are made for builders, not those who oversee their own construction, to ensure safety and prevent litigation on the other end.
Anyway, if you think that such modest impositions are worth the taking of one life, much less a number (enough to shock) or the acceptance of "collateral damage", we have nothing more to discuss........ |
