Where do get the idea that how to's interactive education remote medicine and the like won't be a part of this medium. TV on the Web didn't work because it came too soon. The people who invested in channels there had no commitment to the medium. Most showed one or two lousy videos and got out when they realized that no one was watching. HDTV is a long way off and might never happen because no one for the foreseeable future wants to invest in the broadcast equipment to reach the few early adopters who can lay out five to seven grand for one of currently available models. Some say it will never happen and streamed content over cable is what will take its place. What I like about streaming is that anything can be done with it. Narrowcasting will work, but not on the TVW model. Most of the currently available content will probably be streamed. And it can be as staid and lame or as wild and wacky as its producers care to make it. How to books are a huge market now and how to streaming videos will be just as huge. Educational videos, too. I envision sites offering interviews to writers that every publisher with books to promote will want to get his authors on, especially the midlist types who write the quality books. I envision interview programs with all kinds of interesting people that weren't economically feasible before this. I envision sites for experimental films, experimental TV shows that need to find an audience before they go to the bigtime. Think of the Internet as Philidelphia, you close Philidelphia you stay closed. Sites for dance, opera, music, you name it, you'll be able to find it. Eventually the Madison Avenue boys will figure out that the internet user is looking for something specific that's more compelling and specialized than what they show on broadcast and cable, and they will use this medium to appeal to those people. Maybe it will be a shopping mall but not for the stores at Mall of America. My bet is it will showcase lots of high quality boutique operations who want to appeal to the beter educated consumer. Just think of what iNEXT is doing now as showcasing the tech. Eventually they provide that tech to every website that wants to stream and bingo we've got a franchise.
