cj,

"the answer: 8 million units"
And they actually sold 7.3 million. Still, we don't know if the shortfall happened at Fab30, Fab25, or both.

The capacity of 8 million units was in Q4, and now we are at the end of Q2 2001, and AMD still has not sold 8 million units in any quarter.

I believe there was one quarter (I don't have my spreadsheets here) when AMD sold about 6.3 million units, when Dresden production was barely measurable (Q2 or Q3 2000), so about 6 million processors (K2s) came from Austin. Last quarter (Q1 2001) AMD sold about 3.2 million Athlons, of those some were made in Austin, so Dresden production was probably below 3 million. This is while the capacity in Dresden should be reaching 5 million units this quarter.

My estimate is that AMD capacity this quarter is to produce up 9 to 10 million CPUs, and since most likely only about 7 million units will be sold, there is a surplus capacity most likely in both Dresden and Austin.
