There's a beautiful book by Erich Fromm: To have or to be? Haben oder sein. Will having land give anybody more hope? We're probably talking a selfish kind of hope - "will I get my ass through without much damage" kind of hope. This is a "have"-hope. My inkling is, the "to be"-hope is something altogether different. Works without Gold, Pt or land. At least from what I have experienced in contact with real people, the "to be"-hope is what kept a lot of them happy and alive a long time. How you get it?
