Just because something is proclaimed in a book does not validate it as the truth. In fact, much of the U.S. history being taught to children in public schools today is revisionist, politically correct bullshit. The chapters on FDR are a howl.

This comment of yours is the height of ignorance too: I believe those who argue for a reason other than slavery are emotionally linked to the Southern cause, for whatever reason, and wrongfully so.

The rest of your musings are pure speculation.

States rights were the issue, and to some extent today are still the issue, as well as individual rights versus a power-hungry state. (Something the Founding Fathers attempted to eliminate, but unfortunately failed to accomplish.)

That the power and sovereignty of individual states was greatly harmed by the Civil War is without doubt. This was used as the foundation to further erode state powers during the 20th Century, and also individual rights.
