There were no immediate reports of damage or casualties in the quake, officials said. The Hsinchu Science-based Industrial Park, the heart of Taiwan's high-tech industry, said it had not received any reports of damage from companies.

The two microchip giants account for some 20 percent of total market capitalisation.
