Scumbria, I have a 1 GHz Pentium III system on an ASUS CUSL2 motherboard (the kind that got the AnandTech recommendation ... his recommendations have a lot of pull among enthusiasts, especially me) running Windows 2000. For a while, I've been having problems with the Suspend mode on my system. It enters Suspend mode fine, but after coming out of it, my system can't access the DVD-ROM or CD-RW drives. A BIOS update didn't help. I was beginning to think that the motherboard itself wasn't as functional as Anand's review led me to believe.

I was going to find help on Usenet, but later on I downloaded the latest Win2K Service Pack (which itself was a monster, but I have DSL). After that, Suspend mode works perfectly, and I use it all the time. It's better than leaving the system on all the time and dealing with the noise (which isn't that bad anymore), and it sure beats turning off the computer only to wait as it reboots every time I want to use it.

Moral of the story: More likely than not, system stability problems are a result of the software or OS. You mentioned that you have WinME on your system. I can't think of anyone who has called WinME "rock-solid stable."
