Usually those sort of issues are thought through before hand. The US needs Sadam to keep Iran on it's toes. That's why he was left alone. I do get the impression that they would have been happy for someone to take him out internally, while keeping their military diminished, but still a worry for the Iranians.

Global politics is rarely about doing the right thing. If they can look out for their own interests, and be seen to be the good guys as well, then that's a bonus, but it's almost never the central consideration. It's sad.
