Xybernaut Corporation Places Mobile Assistant(R) II in U.S.S. Princeton
FAIRFAX, Va., June 12 /PRNewswire/ -- Xybernaut Corporation (Nasdaq: XYBR), a pioneer and leader in the wearable computer market, announced it has joined with the U.S. Navy to place its Mobile Assistant II on board the U.S.S. Princeton for evaluation in SMARTLINK, a Naval 21st Century project combining Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM) and satellite communications to provide "real-time" ship-to-shore communications anywhere in the world. The U.S.S. Princeton operates with aircraft carrier battle groups in extreme threat environments to detect, classify, and track potential targets simultaneously in the air, on the surface, and under the sea. As part of the program, the Navy plans to test Xybernaut(R)'s speech- activated, two-pound mobile computer. The test is intended to show how Xybernaut's Mobile Assistant II will aid technicians with maintenance projects, and corpsmen throughout the ship, especially in small, remote spaces. Interactive Electronic Training Manuals (IETMs), which have reams of technical instructions for repair and maintenance of the ship's equipment and weapon systems, will reside on the Mobile Assistant II and will be instantly accessible to the sailor wherever work is being done. Other applications being evaluated include video-teleconferencing (VTC) to manage damage control assessment, data collection using automated test equipment, collection of vessel information with a roving video to assist the Law Enforcement Operations Detachment (LEO DET), and medical damage assessment to log casualty information. The primary goal of the SMARTLINK program is to reduce operating and support costs of deployed ships. The Mobile Assistant, along with other related technologies, is being demonstrated and evaluated to help the Navy accomplish its goal of doing more with less. Lt. Richard Stakelum, involved in the project since its inception, reflected the Navy's satisfaction in the Mobile Assistant II saying, "It is probably the best wearable computer we have tested." (Ret.) Vice Admiral Steve Loftus, member of The Spectrum Group, and of Xybernaut's Advisory Board, stated, "With an increased need for deployed forces coupled with a decrease in the resources to support them, it is necessary to go beyond merely improving tools and technology. The Navy must actually leverage technology to fundamentally change existing processes. The SMARTLINK project was designed to provide the impetus for these emerging shifts in computing that are intended to increase naval logistics productivity. We're confident that a successful test program can result in a roll-out of more Xybernaut systems to the Navy fleet."
