But the point is, if we spent $1 trillion for a missile defense system, then any nut-case dictator would realize this. Then said dictator would instead send a slow boat to China ... or, in this case ... a slow boat to New York City with an A-bomb in the hull. Actually, the latter probably would be more effective in terms of concentrated destruction, since the suicide A-bombers wouldn't trigger the bomb until the Statue of Liberty was in clear sight. Missiles from Iraq, on the other hand, might well land in the Atlantic Ocean or in a sparsely inhabited section of Pennsylvania. A more reliable deterrent is to point out to all of the nut-case dictators in the world that in the event of a nuclear attack on one of our cities, the full fury of one of our nuclear subs would be unleashed on said country. Here today, gone tomorrow.
