BUSH wanted to rip up environmental laws when he came in, but after public outcry, losing the senate and international outrage he is backing off that to a degree and posing as a environmental moderate. Cheney thought he could control energy policy and do a de-regulatory James Watt on the environment but even Cheney is losing credibility and power as he has shown an inability to compromise, care or understand basic environmental logic. The villainous view toward the environment was absolutely responsible for the Jeffords move. Jeffords now heads the environmental committee which will put a stop to the oil patch crowd controlling the White House. And I'm sure Christine Todd Whitman is ashamed as hell to be a part of it and relieved her fellow moderates are forcing her boss to back off.
