McGowan: My transformation from a registered Republican to a registered Democrat didn't occur overnight. It was probably a four-year process that began around '94, after the Repubs took control of the House. I kept waiting for the Repubs in Congress to change the country for the better through creative legislation and moral leadership. I waited, and I waited, and I waited ... then they attacked Clinton when he was down simply for the sake of partisan politics. The punitive action by the Republicans could have thrown the economy and possibly the country into disarray, but Hyde, Livingston et al. didn't care. They smelled blood. Other factors besides the Clinton impeachment proceedings also entered into the decision, most notably seeing first-hand by way of 50 bargaining sessions how Big Business really operates. (Hint: "ethics" ain't in their dictionary.)

As a kid fresh out of college in '72, I voted for McGovern not because I thought Nixon was bad (I didn't), but because I thought Agnew was a first-class moron. History proved me correct. I then voted for Ford, Reagan twice, Bush once, no one in '96 and Gore in '00. The two easiest votes were Reagan in '80 and Gore in '00.

You also owe me an apology for inferring that I lied.

Goldwater? He had backbone and probably wouldn't have had much use for the likes of D-Dubya-I or Armey.
