Nearby is the town of Warrnambool, which we thoroughly enjoyed last fall (here; spring there-g-). We stayed here: standard.net.au , where the balcony is full of sulfur-crested cockatoos & galahs, among other birds at the feeders. That's as close to Melbourne as we stayed (excepting, of course, Melbourne, which we found to be very pleasant for the brief time we had there). BTW, the best rent car deal we found was Delta/National, where we rented a Camry for $AU630 for 12 days with a downtown pickup and airport dropoff for no extra charge.
