Sonki, re: your nephew's account

You are wise to average your purchases over several months, to avoid buying a substantial amount just prior to a correction.

I assume you were planning to take profits in Oracle and sell Ascend for reasons unrelated to purchase of Vanguard 500. If not, then you could wait to sell parts of them until you are ready to buy each portion of the Vanguard. [This comment assumes that the account is not so small that minimum commission size is a problem.]

I believe you should retain the Microsoft and Intel, as I believe them to be excellent long-term investments. [I am undecided on Cisco.]

As you get additional funds for his account, you probably should choose to add it to the Vanguard until you feel comfortable with the allocation. [I won't give you a guideline here, because I don't know your comfort level or your nephew's investment requirements.]

I hold substantial Vanguard 500 [VFINX] in the accounts of my relatives, and also hold some for my own account. I have been most pleased with the performance. I also am pleased not to have to concern myself with some idiotic manager's discretionary stock picks failing to match the market, which is unfortunately usually the case. I am further pleased with the low percentage of realized gains and other distributions, which is important assuming that a non-tax-deferred account is involved.

IMHO

Best regards,

Arno
