How committed is DoCoMo
----------

DoCoMo is married to a 3GPP solution.

But I believe that carriers can influence what "a 3GPP solution" becomes.

There is speculation on the moderated RB thread that Q's wCDMA chipset due in September may have some surprises... in regard to handoff... that may respond to European carriers' concerns...

Asynchronous handoff, according to the opinions of, among others, IJ (most recently reflected yesterday in his son's comments) and Seybold, has serious and perhaps chronic problems.

Could Guild carriers muscle a Q hybrid handoff specification into UMTS standards? It would be interesting to watch....

Regarding NTT, as wCDMA first and only mover, they could presume to do whatever they pleased. They're reportedly already using a proprietary handoff scheme - so they may be well ahead in understanding what a POS specification UMTS is....
