The other Gorilla (Microsoft) is going from the bottom upwards, similar to what Christiansen observed when smaller hard disk manufacturers appeared and displaced the incumbents. Unless one believes that NT and its progeny are going to take over the world, there seems to be a clear upper limit on how far SQL Server can go in capturing market share unless MSFT does the unthinkable and ports it to Unix. In fact, what is remarkable in a way is just how large a percentage of the NT market Oracle has considering the near total dominance MSFT in product categories like Office.
