Give me a break. Jefferson's political philosophy was impossibly idealistic, but he didn't let that idealism get in the way of his personal life. Jefferson was born into the Virginia landed gentry, and he didn't exactly go out of his way to escape the plantation lifestyle, highly dependent on slavery as it was. When he died, deeply in debt, he owned 130 slaves, who were all sold off at auction.

Those contradictions mean something. To gloss it all over in the interest of patriotic hero worship is nice, but not particularly honest intellectually.
