The industry is moving ahead of the GSM cartel. The problems with the transition from 2nd Generation to 3rd Generation technologies are becoming self evident - GPRS does not function as a viable bridge from GSM to WCDMA. The GSM cartel does not understand power control and handoffs. They have tried to no avail to invent ways around QCOM IPR with concepts like higher chip speeds and asyncronous base stations. It is completely unnecessary based on the fact that they are going to pay QCOM royalties regardless - it's time to stop all the redundant engineering (especially when it results in inferior product designs).
