Finally, treason is defined in the Constitution as making war upon the United States, not an individual state, which indicates that the federal government is the sovereign power
But there is (or at least was) a doctrine of treason against a state. John Brown was hung for treason against the state of Virginia.

But whether some were under the illusion that they could come and go as they please is irrelevant, as long as the right is not stated in the document to which they are signatory, and which lays out the terms of Union.
And, while that document does not specify how to secede, it also does NOT say a state cannot secede. Should not such an important matter be specifically spelled out if that is what is meant? Or is it just a later invention of a power-hungry federal gov't?

And:
Article X.

The powers not delegated to the United States by the Constitution, nor prohibited by it to the States, are reserved to the States respectively, or to the people.

Since the Constitution does not prohibit secession, it would appear such power still resides in the states and the people of those states.
