Hi Mark,

Yes, I've run a complete Norton Virus Scan on both hard drives (with the latest definitions dated 6/13/2001) and everything came up clean. I'm really starting to get frustrated... and I guess it shows. I've written down the numbers of the posts with advice sent to me by the great folks on this thread. My real fear is losing all my Word documents, databases from other programs, Outlook Express mail and address book, and my Internet Explorer 5.5 favorites.

I did find the hypertrm.dll on the site tc pointed me to (thanks tc), but it asks for paths, etc. when you go to download it, so I stopped before "clicking" download. I admit to being a novice and don't want to mess things up more than then they already are. BTW, I searched the WIN98SE CD for hypertrm.dll and it wasn't there??? I don't even know what hyperterminal does. I found the .exe file with a "find file" search, but when I "clicked" on it a window popped open saying I was missing the hypertrm.dll file. Perhaps if I knew what paths to use on the site tc gave me (http://www.siliconinvestor.com/readmsg.aspx?msgid=15941292) post# 20659, for downloading the dll at least that would solve that problem.

Regarding the DirectX... I did upgrade to DirectX Ver.8. When I go to DirectX diagnostics, the window opens and then after about 5 seconds the computer crashes and goes into a soft reboot.

I do sincerely appreciate and want to thank all for the offers of help. Maybe someone can figure this out. Too bad we don't have a resident expert in the San Francisco Bay area <VBG>.

Marty
