Yaakov, you should read a nice old book by one of by fore-fore-uncles, Rabbi Yehuda Halevi about the Kusari, they sought a monotheistic faith, and deliberated between Catholicism, Judaism and Islam, and freely chose Judaism. They were not proselytized. As for extremists, every one has those. The Lubavitch are not extremists, they will nag you to pray, but will not prey and will not put a gun to your head to pray.
