True, the developers adapt to the capabilities of the current platform, or very near future platform. Agreed that developers come up with smaller programs, in line with the crippled capabilities of the interface, but I'd be hard pressed to call them elegant. In fact I find the vast differences in the user interfaces down right annoying and primative.

There's only so much economizing that can be done. They sacrifice fit and form (because they have no choice) for function. This small cheesy SI edit window is a perfect example.

Last shrink-wrapped s/w? Hmmm, a couple years I suppose. The last few I bought I downloaded, since they disincentiveize (is that a word:o)) buying the shrinkwrapped product by jacking up the price without any real benefit. It used to be worth some premium for the print manuals and dedicated CD, but not any more. The print manuals are like pamphlets.
Not sure I'm following your link between buying packaged s/w and your prior comments....
