Chaz,
<< does anyone here know Nokia's plans on EDGE enabled handsets. If, when, and where? >>
Nokia, to the best of my knowledge has "announced" no plans for an EDGE handset, and the whole issue of handsets remains a matter of conjecture.
Personally, I assume they will offer them, and AWS would be the initial driver.
I further assume that they have plans, and that those plans are under wraps, and that is a good place to have them.
<< As for handsets, will Nokia make them, perhaps combined with GSM and GPRS, or with WCDMA? >>
Any EDGE handset will be multi-mode with GSM - likely with GPRS - and perhaps WCDMA but not necessarily. All Nokia WCDMA handsets will include GSM, if I interpret what Nokia is saying correctly, and possibly GPRS.
<< And will EDGE be primarily used in old or new spectrum?
Initially in existing spectrum, since AWS will be first user of GSM-EDGE (with Cingular & VoiceStream probably behind them).
TDMA-EDGE seems to still be in Cingular's plans for 11 of their 13 properties. Nokia has announced support for that in a general sense, but whether or not they will provide handsets remains to be seen. I think they would prefer not too, and would prefer to see Cingular doing the GSM trick across the board. CDMA, I suppose, could still be in play, but if so, Cingular is sure not admitting to it.
As for EDGE in new spectrum ... I think the jury is still out on that.
In fact, is EDGE even permitted under Europe's rules in new spectrum, with UMTS or stand alone?
<< In fact, is EDGE even permitted under Europe's rules in new spectrum, with UMTS or stand alone? >>
Not necessarily.
<< Where and under what conditions has EDGE been tested in a real world situation? >>
Same places as 1xEV.
