AMD sloes down its 1.8GHz gintrap

Mistake! Intel can now do a .13 P4
By Mike Magee, 17/06/01 18:08:29 BST

THAT LAD JC at JC's has spotted a piece at Akiba reckoning AMD is slowing down its Athlon gintrap and intro-ing several different lesser revs between now and Yule.

This is nothing to do with technology, we can confidently report, and everything to do with market demand, which is far slower than AMD expected or for that matter anticipated.

Course it's true to say that Intel had already delivered Megahurts Hell to AMD by delivering a 1.7 Pentium 4, but the benchmarketing seemed to suggest that most Athlons could trash a P4 at that speed. AMD has only just delivered a 1.4GHz Athlon and that is in scanty quantity so far, although as little as a month ago it was able to speak loudly about 1.8GHz Athlons this year. Well, you're just going to have to wait for them - maybe.

Why maybe? Well, Intel is a bit surprised at the lack of demand too, according to soundings made in the channel last week. The roadmaps are now flashing so fast past the Powerpointillista's eyes that most of the marchitecture folk at AMD and Intel don't need fancy screamsavers (sic).
Plus, AMD had better watch it because if we're not very much mistaken, Intel will very soon now intro its 1.8GHz Pentium 4 - or possibly even a 2GHz Pentium 4, which oughta scare the hell out of AMD a little bit, due to stress.
JellyComb - Nota Bene - And when La Intella says Q3, it seems to mean very early Q3, so the world+dog+macaw tells us.

Further, the wire reports, it will also roll out a 1.6GHz Pentium 4 on the Coppermine process too.

We don't have up-to-date pricing. Yet. Via claims it is the first to market with a .13 micron X86 CPU with its Ezra thingie. We don't know how many .13 micron chips Intel will be able to roll out yet - but suspect it would not like to find itself in the same position as it was when it introduced the earlier, .18 micron, Coppermine process, when supply of these was severely constrained.

We are still waiting for Intel to confirm or deny our story about the Tualatin mobile processors being delayed for marketing reasons, although this story is correct as well, with a late July date touted by the Russian wire, confirming our own reports.

Intel will, however, manage to bang at least one 1.13GHz Tualatin into Q2, which ends RSN, and so will be able to say it didn't entirely break its promise about managing it in Q2.

Intel will not comment on its future announcements, plus, it being Sunday, was not available for comment, according to ancient laws and traditions.

As reported here before, La Intella will cut some prices on Celeronicas tomorrow. Big deal compared to the P4 story, we reckon, but if you want to find out what they are, go to my older stories, the prices are substantially correct. µ
