Did someone actually sit inside listening to this all day? And to think I could barely tolerate the sound of dot matrix printers (remember those?<gg>) for a few minutes a day.

Now I know what this sound ( that I've heard as a faint background sound during calls before) is:
An MF string followed by a trunk start signal.
