Re: GPRS (Fast "Always On" WAP 2 & MMS & MMI)

"Mighty" good post.

<< No, GPRS is about data solution, it does nothing to increase the capacity, it is only trying to no to waste more. >>

GPRS does come with a caveat and it is expressed well by Peter Rysavy who I think has written some of the best and most realistic articles over the last 4 years about GPRS, its potential, its upside, its downside, and the important role it plays in 3G (EDGE, WCDMA, VoIP).

This is the caveat:

"GPRS could quickly become a victim of its own success if too many people use it for large downloads. Since users contend for a limited number of GPRS radio channels, throughput will go down with an increasing number of active users. WAP addresses this issue by a text orientation and small screens, thus minimizing the network's load. Carriers are likely to push WAP over GPRS vs. general-purpose networking".

So GPRS will be WAP 2 & MMS and e-mail. As Mika points out, not much web surfing other than that enabled by WAP, but same on CDMA phones if low end with small monochrome display, and the MMI most wireless users are currently used to.

... which leads us hopefully to 3G (WCDMA or 1xRTT/1xEV).
