Jon your a wealth of telco information and experience, thanks for weighing in, even though you seem to prefer to stay in the background.
I appreciate the over view, and intend to use it as a resource to direct me to further research.
I just hope that you would be willing to respond to a further question or two, where someone with your experience, might be able to set some one like myself straight, on telco equipment matters.
Your comments about RBOC's comfort with a possible return to a more monopolistic playing field made me laugh.
"all in all things are getting MUCH better for the RBOCS they now have the FCC working in their favor and it looks like they are not going to have to wholesale out their copper, well maybe , maybe not , it is looking better for them anyway and this gives the RBOCS ( what’s left of em )something they understand NO COMPETITION they love that arena"
I have been fast tracking my proactive involvement with WSTL on this board. I need to get more up to speed with XDSL and HDSL.
"I am looking to Westell to increase their CO side of this equation or their Transport Group as they refer to it . Higher Margins in the equipment and alot of follow on revenue once one's foot is in the door so to speak."
I assume you are referring to the equipment that connects different systems with in the local telco network. Hasn't it been this area that has been the bottle neck, for the roll out of advanced digital broadband signal over copper. From what I understand developements in remote access multiplexers have solved this bottle neck. I assume WSTL's latest equipment products address this same area. I thought I saw the mention of a multiplexer in the new equipment, in WSTL's latest product announcement. Anyway common sense says this area is key.
Network Transmission Products
In the area of Network Transmission Products, Westell is launching a new line of HDSL4 products, new DS-3 Network Interface Units (MegaJack(TM) and Proact3(TM)), and a new fiber-optic transmission system called "Op-T-Span". In addition, Westell will feature the award-winning ASTS(TM) HDSL2 transmission system (with integrated DS3 Multiplexer, test access, and protection switching) and new indoor/outdoor enclosures for T1, HDSL2, and HDSL4 plug-ins.
"Our new high-speed transmission products for public network providers include plug-in units and full systems design to operate with many types of local loop media including fiber optic cables, twisted-pair copper, and coax. Our HDSL2 products are state-of-the-art, providing full duplex 1.544Mb/s services over a single copper pair. Our HDSL2 products are completely interoperable with the other major suppliers' HDSL2 products and systems. The new DS3 MegaJack platform includes a DS-3 Performance Monitoring NIU designed to operate on coaxial cable DS-3 circuits, providing remote maintenance features in addition to full DS-3 performance monitoring. Our new fiber-optic transmission system, Op-T-Span, is used by LECs, utilities, and wireless network providers to install DS1 services safely (using fiber-optic cable) into a hazardous high-voltage environment - such as when a radio antenna site is collocated with a high-voltage power tower", said Bill Murphy, Vice President of Marketing, Westell Telco Access Products (TAP) business unit. |
