Amkor Says Deal To Buy Taiwan Semiconductor Cos Imminent

TAIPEI -- A spokesman at Amkor Technology Inc. (AMKR) Monday said completion of a deal to acquire two Taiwan chip testing and packaging companies was "imminent" but declined to provide further details.

The comment follows a local media report in Taiwan that the U.S. semiconductor testing and packaging company Wednesday will sign contracts to buy Sampo Semiconductor Corp. and Taiwan Semiconductor Technology Corp.

The acquisitions would be made via share swaps with their major shareholders and would be valued at NT$5 billion (US$1=NT$34.392), it said.

Among Taiwan Semiconductor's major shareholders is Acer Inc. (Q.ACE), Taiwan's biggest PC maker. Sampo is mainly owned by Sampo Corp.

In March, Amkor announced it had signed letters of intent for the acquisitions, which it said it would finance through the issuance of stock.

Amkor already owns a 25% stake in joint venture Taiwan Semiconductor.
