NEW YORK (Reuters) - Salomon Smith Barney on Monday trimmed its 2001 and 2002 aggregate earnings estimate for the companies in the Standard & Poor's 500 Index to reflect what it described as the ``sheer collapse'' of the tech sector.

Salomon is forecasting ``technology sector earnings may plummet 45 percent year over year in 2001, versus (a Wall Street) consensus of more like a 35 percent fall,'' Levkovich said.
