However, there is a connection between abortion and infanticide. If you read the literature you will see that, where contraception and abortion are disallowed or made difficult, both abortion AND infanticide INCREASE. So making the practice of abortion a sensible and serious matter between a woman and her doctor seems like a reasonable plan right across the board, doesn't it?

No it does not. It does make a good argument that allowing or even encouraging contraception is a reasonable plan, but I wasn't opposing contraception.

Contraceptives and the legalizing of abortion have reduced abortions

That's like saying "WWII and the pacifist movement increased American military spending in the 1940s". I might agree with your argument that contraceptives have decreased the number of abortions, but it would be pretty hard to convince me that making abortion legal has reduced the number of abortions.

As the church begins to allow safe sex

The Catholic Church has not had the power to allow and forbid things for hundreds of years. It can tell you that it thinks they are wrong but no one has to listen. Outside of a few fundamentalist Islamic states no religious organization has that much power any more.
