The GPRS "caveat" is "fixed" with HSCSD, for those in need of a guaranteed channel during busy hours.
Additionally two bands, 900+1800MHz is built out in the regular GSM world, with 1800MHz representing smaller cell sizes and lower power.
WCDMA fills out the hierarchical system, for those ready to pay more for handsets and batteries.
As does those going for fixed wireless, WLAN and all that local jazz in more crowded places.
And also digital terrestrial TV,OFDMA, for those CSPAN services.
While bluetooth glues all of that together, Tarzan will miss his cable jungle.

GPRS is great at using that 50% capacity wasted when one normally just listens, can and will be done incrementally, just as EDGE, dynamic channel and capacity alocation, etc.
And at some point there will be the same problem as the CSPAN "digital must carry", how to add OFDMA and get rid of old standards. (CSPAN has been pushed off many cables as part of spectra must be reserved for digital transmission, but transmitting the same channels as still must be transmitted on the analog spectra) |
