GSTAAD, Switzerland, June 18 (Reuters) - Germany's Volkswagen AG said Monday group sales rose 2.7 percent in the January-May period to 2,197,033 vehicles.

VW board member Robert Buechelhofer, speaking on the sidelines of a new product roll-out, said group sales in May alone rose between 3.6 percent and 3.7 percent, compared with the same month a year ago. VW brand car sales rose 2.4 percent in the five-month January-May period to 1,348,481 vehicles. Sales in Europe rose 0.7 percent in the period, of which German sales fell six percent and North American sales fell 2.4 percent. VW brand car sales in South America were up 18.2 percent and in the Asia- Pacific region, they rose 19.9 percent.

Buechelhofer also repeated VW's earlier forecast that unit sales would rise in 2001 compared with 2000. Analysts believe car makers will struggle to increase sales this year due to an economic downturn that could depress demand.
