Gore's debate problems were that he had spent a lifetime having just the right personality for the people he was trying to impress. New night-new personality: That's how liberals run for office. When his advisers assessed that he had used the "wrong" personality in debate #1, it so shook and confused him, he never recovered. This probably showed more people how unqualified for the office he was than anything he said during the debates.

The problem with people like Gore is not that they have forgotten who they are, but that they were never anybody in the first place. All of a sudden they are running for the top spot in their profession, and people start talking about personal character, and they have to somehow manufacture it. Gore simply didn't measure up.

And that's what liberals don't understand about the presidency. All too frequently, because it's a serious job, someone who is actually principled gets it, and the liberals' lapdog press then has to spend years trying to gun the guy down. As recent examples: we have Nixon, Reagan, and Bush II. They will be the least successful in damaging Bush II, who will win re-election with 52% or more in 2004...
