got e-mail from MSN
Dear MSN Internet Access Subscriber,
In our continuing effort to further secure and improve the MSN Internet Access e-mail service, we are initiating a series of e-mail enhancements to help you protect your MSN account from unsolicited commercial e-mail, often referred to as "spam". In order to implement these enhancements, it will be necessary for you to modify your e-mail settings by July 16, 2001. If you do not make this change, as we roll-out our new system, you will lose the ability to send e-mail.
I have made the changes and they look like they will authenticate anything I send. They won't protect me against incoming spam, unless it's from an MSN member. But it is a step in the right direction.
Here are the changes...
Microsoft Outlook Express 5.0 and above
1. Start Outlook Express.
2. From the top menu bar, select "Tools", then "Accounts".
3. From the "All" tab, choose "MSN Mail", then click "Properties".
4. Select the "Servers" tab.
5. Click the "My server requires authentication" checkbox under "Outgoing Mail Server".
6. Click "Settings".
7. Click the "Log on Using" option.
8. In the "Account Name" box, enter your username. Do not include your domain (the part of your e-mail address that begins with the @ symbol).
9. In the "Password" box, enter your password. Optionally, you can to choose the "Remember Password" box to avoid entering your password each time you sign in to your e-mail application.
10. Click the "Log on using Secure Password Authentication" checkbox.
11. Click "OK".
