How old was the cat? They have a tendency to want to crawl off to...uh...pass. It's not quite the same, but I had a similar experience late last fall. My furnace wouldn't kick on. Turns out a squirrel had crawled into the exhaust pipe and went all the way down into the blower motor. I must say, there was a rather interesting scent throughout the house once the furnace guy got it out and the furnace kicked on.
