Liberate Advances Double-Byte Support for Asian Languages Over Digital Interactive Television
Liberate Shows Next-Generation Digital Interactive Services in Simplified Chinese, Traditional Chinese, Japanese and Korean at Broadcast Asia 2001 Conference in Singapore
SINGAPORE and San Carlos, Calif., June 18 /PRNewswire/ -- Liberate Technologies (Nasdaq: LBRT - news), a leading provider of software for the delivery of interactive television, today demonstrated the first operational end-to-end integrated software platform with Asian language double-byte* support for digital interactive television services.
(Photo: newscom.com ) The demonstration, held daily at the Broadcast Asia 2001 conference underway in Singapore this week, showed consumer television services in Simplified Chinese, Traditional Chinese, Japanese and Korean. Viewers can select on a digital set-top box their preferred language for user interface, navigation and content. The Liberate platform lets viewers switch dynamically among different languages with crisp displays of Asian characters using anti-aliased scalable font rendering.
Visitors to the Liberate booth can see a digital interactive on-demand Karaoke application, e-mail services, a walled garden service with distance education for children, and a ticker application with news, sports, finance, weather and entertainment headlines that lets viewers click for more information while continuing to enjoy their favorite television show in a scaled video window. Content and applications in Asian languages can be developed quickly and inexpensively using open standards-based Web authoring tools.
''Liberate is fully committed to supporting network operators in the Asia Pacific market who are deploying next generation interactive and enhanced television services with local language support,'' said Don Fitzpatrick, Liberate's executive vice president of sales and services.
This enhanced offering for the Liberate® TV Platform Standard(TM) client and server software suite builds on Liberate's leadership in double-byte support. Liberate was the first to market with interactive television in Asia Pacific offering services in local languages. Liberate's new enhanced platform delivers interactive services with double-byte support over digital IP networks such as DSL and over digital broadcast networks such as cable, satellite and digital terrestrial.
Multilanguage support on the Liberate platform will be available to network operators for integration later this year. The software gives viewers a broad choice of Asian character input methods, including PinYin, Wubi and ZhuYin. In addition to support for double byte display, the software allows for dynamic language switching across a wide range of character sets.
* Double-byte character sets are needed for languages such as Chinese, Japanese and Korean that have thousands of characters. A double-byte character set requires 16-bit (two-byte) characters rather than the 8-bit (one-byte) characters used in English and most other European languages.
