Hi John,

Fiber can transmit 80 different colors of light in the same fiber vs just one in dark fiber from old approaches.

The photon gets modulated at speeds of 10gbps and the leading edge is 40 gbps. This is very expensive but handles 4x 80 times as much data. Two companies I know of are using polymeric optoelectric active fiber as modulators and are about to reinvent the technology of modulators. This new technology tests out at 40gbps and can go up to an unheard of 100 gbps.So now all that fiber can handle 4x80x21/2 as much bandwidth. Think of bandwidth as the capability of switching light on and of(modulating) long and short blips of light much like electrons in wires pass thru a microprocessor - x's and o's.

The main point is technology is just beginning in fiber optics much like transistors and IC back in the 60's.

The future growth is to connect the last mile so all this data can be used with all of the population. So the long lines are done(with technology enhancements)now we need to connect evrybody so we can fill up the lines. Metro area networks will do this - starting with big business centers and working its way down. The bad part of the story is it will be done at the rate of the Rbocs (baby bells) they are the only players left with money.their approach will be slow and methodical. Lets face it the IPO money is gone-the banks stopped lending and last fall the brokers got burned underwriting the debt.So what's left now is pay as you go.

It really is good business, just not the guns and butter we're used to: 360, levelthree, winstar, all are out of cash - the party is over. They even used up some of Csco, and Nortels money. Its over.

That is the surprise of the telecom slow down - common sense finally prevailed when the MOMO money was spent.

JMHO Bob
