The Globe and Mail reports in its Tuesday, June 19, edition that formal
talks between Inco and the Newfoundland government over the potential
development of the $1.6-billion Voisey's Bay nickel project commenced
Monday in Toronto. The Globe's Allan Robinson writes that Inco told the
provincial government it is developing a special hydrometallurgical process
that could be used to produce nickel from the sulphide ore it would mine at
Voisey's Bay in Labrador. That process is still at the laboratory stage and
eventually would have to be tested at a pilot plant, says an unnamed
analyst. Hydrometallurgical technology is now used to process laterite
ores, a leached soil typically found in the tropics. Inco believes that a
breakthrough in hydromet technology could make it economical to process
nickel within the province and allow it to meet the province's key demand
that nickel concentrate from Labrador be processed into nickel in
Newfoundland and not shipped to Inco's refinery and smelting facilities in
Ontario and Manitoba.
