ISVs know and accept the fact that apps need to be recompiled for Itanium processors. None of the ISVs I've worked with are even contemplating selling their x86 applications in the Itanium processor marketplace.

Re: It was also mentioned apparently that c't tried to compile SPEC on their own, but couldn't get the compiler to produce an error free binary.

There are certain coding conventions that simply require human tweaking when porting to 64-bit operating systems, regardless of the compiler. This may have been the case with c't, but it's hard to know because of the limited details that were given in the article.
