I have been using ParcPlace's products for the last four years and
until recently I was also a shareholder (I sold off on the recent 14
high). They definitely make some excellent products (VisualWorks is
their Smalltalk based Object-Oriented development environment,
VisualWave is their WWW development tool, they also have a JAVA product).

When considering this stock I think it's important to remember that
their main competitor is IBM's VisualAge for Smalltalk. The market is
not very big and unless their WWW development tools catch on they could
easily be swallowed by IBM. I've actually seen VisualAge beat out
VisualWorks as the tool of choice on several projects only because it
came from IBM.

The main advantage to VisualWorks (the ParcPlace product) is that it
runs on many, many more platforms than VisualAge. These include Mac,
Windows, OS/2, several flavours of UNIX, etc.
