Athlon MP wins against P4 in Intel Application Launcher

watch.impress.co.jp

Benchmark scores from PC Watch Japan:

Intel Application Launcher (Megnitrax v1.02)

Athlon MP 1.2 GHz 172
Athlon 1.4 GHz 42
Athlon 1.2 GHz 36
Pentium III 1.0 GHz 98
Pentium 4 1.7 GHz 143

So, let's see: In this Intel benchmark a 1.2 GHz Athlon MP is nearly five times as fast as an Athlon 1.2 GHz. And guess what, it even beats the 1.7 GHz Pentium 4. I'm sure Megnitrax is specially optimized for future applications that will show the full potential of the great Pentium 4 architecture. Too bad for Intel that AMD has SSE now. I wonder what new benchmarks Intel will come up with? My guess: SSE2 "enhanced".

The rest of the review is also interesting. We have lots of different benchmarks and the Athlon MP almost always beats the 1.4 GHz Athlon. PC Watch Japan took also the time to bench with SSE enabled and disabled and e.g. in the MPEg2 encoding test the Athlon MP gains around 10% because of architectural improvements and another 10% because of SSE. A 1.4 GHz Athlon 4 will probably come very close to a 1.7 GHz Pentium 4 in these bandwidth stressing benchmarks (currently the delta is only 10% between the two).
