As to content, from what I have seen, while some neophytes play with B&D and S&M, there is I believe a strong indication that more extensive interest in these particular diversions can be indicative of some extremely heavy duty psychological problems, particularly centering on an unhealthy urge to dominate, control and hurt, or on the other side, the urge to be humiliated and physically degraded. In most cases, these urges are indicative of heavy childhood abuse of one kind or another. There is a big difference between wearing a bit of leather and engaging in the more sordid variations of these activities, but there is also some degree of progression in these activities, starting innocently enough but intensifying. It is also very often the desire of only one partner to get further into these activities, and it is very possible for the other partner to get dragged in way too deep just through a desire to please the other. |
