<<<Cisco CEO: Optimistic About Industry Growth
By Pete Lofthus
Of DOW JONES NEWSWIRES

NEW YORK -(Dow Jones)- Cisco Systems Inc. (CSCO) Chief Executive John Chambers said he remains an optimist about the growth of the network equipment industry, even after recent signs of a sharp slowdown from Cisco's competitors.

Speaking at the Securities Industry Association Technology Conference here Tuesday, Chambers said he continues to believe that the networking sector can grow 30% to 50% annually in an economy "with good capital spending."
In comments after his presentation, Chambers declined to provide an update on Cisco's fiscal fourth quarter, which ends in late July. Last month, Cisco predicted fourth-quarter revenue would be flat or down by as much as 10% compared with the third quarter's $4.73 billion.
Last week, two Cisco competitors - Nortel Networks Corp. (NT) and Juniper Networks (JNPR) - issued substantial profit warnings that signaled further deterioration of the networking industry.

Chambers predicted that a wave of consolidation in the networking industry would leave three to five "major players." He said the biggest competitive threat to Cisco would come from startup firms.>>>

Repeat: "He said the biggest competitive threat to Cisco would come from startup firms."

Namaste!
