PCCW Stops Free Taiwan Netvigator Services to Cut Costs
Jun 19, 2001 - 11:35:56 HKT
Quamnet News Service
Pacific Century CyberWorks (0008), Richard Li's Asian communications vehicle, has trimmed its Taiwan Netvigator operations to cut costs, executive vice-president Raymond So told Quamnet News in a telephone interview.

So confirmed that PCCW has scrapped the free e-mail and free homepaging services, and has cut more than one third of its 20 staff. Though, it has no plans for a further lay-off.

So said Taiwan Netvigator has more than 500,000 registered members but it is difficult for the company to impose a fee as local customers do not get used to pay for such online services. Also, PCCW has to pay for the rental of bandwidth as it is not an Internet service provider in Taiwan. The lack of revenue stream with only the number of member growing means higher costs for the operation, he said.

However, So said PCCW doesn't plan to shut its Taiwan Netvigator website and will use the content provided by its Hong Kong operation. "We'll focus more on the development of broadband and e-trade in the future," he added. "More details will be released at the end of month, when we will also announce our B2C restructuring plans."
