Just a little info. re: attorney Steve Berman: law.washington.edu
Steve W. Berman is managing partner at the Seattle firm Hagens Berman where his practice focuses on class actions and multi-plaintiff litigation.
He has prosecuted numerous class action and complex litigations involving entities in such notable and high profile matters as the Washington Public Power Supply System and the Exxon Valdez Oil Spill.
Berman has also successfully litigated against major tobacco companies. In the Tobacco Litigations, Berman served as a Special Assistant Attorney General for the states of Washington, Arizona, Illinois, Indiana, New York, Alaska, Idaho, Ohio, Oregon, Nevada, Montana, Vermont and Rhode Island. The states sought to enjoin the tobacco industry from targeting minors and damages for increased health care costs attributable to smoking. Berman is serving as lead outside counsel for each of these states. Berman was a principal in the groundbreaking settlement with Liggett and the proposed national settlement.
His role was recently described in the book People v. Big Tobacco. He negotiated a settlement that required Liggett to admit that smoking causes cancer. More recently, Berman and his firm have represented plaintiffs in groundbreaking human rights litigation against Japanese corporations for their used of forced labor during the Second World War.
He is also representing plaintiffs in a lawsuit against Rio Tinto concerning environmental destruction arising from the company's mining activities in Papua New Guinea. Berman graduated from the University of Michigan in 1976 and the University of Chicago Law School in 1980. In April 2000, the National Law Journal listed Berman as the top litigator in the state of Washington.
In January 2001, Seattle Magazine featured Berman as one of Seattle's Top Lawyers.
